‘Man with a flower-wreath / May’ 1966

Signed & dated study in watercolor on paperboard 40×28 cm

€ 2.500 – 3.500

In this wonderful study for the month of May, becomes obvious what Andreas Empirikos describes about Tsarouchis’ painting that “he orchestrates color symphonies that culminate in small or huge color compositions”. With modesty and simplicity, giving rhythm to the tectonic characteristics of the form and emphasizing the dominance of the expression, he succeeds in capturing the moment immediately. In this unadorned painting, the pre-formation and the inscriptions, the corporeality, the sweetening of the face with colors and the subtle touches reveal the artist’s strong connection to Byzantine iconography. The flesh is compact at a lower intensity than the first light. The light source comes obliquely from the right illuminating some points while others are lit by the “covered” sweetness shining from below. “All these amidst the most dazzling light of the full meridian, all these in the glory of the most exuberant greek light.”
