‘Umbrellas and bicycles at the beach’
Signed oil on canvas 45×60 cm
€ 3.500 – 5.500
One of Vassiliou’s most beautiful compositions from his series of everyday objects on pictorial adventures, this time featuring umbrellas. The semantic theme of simple often unnoticed objects from everyday life is one of his favorites. As a pattern and a symbol, the umbrella may refer to some form of protection, albeit of a vulnerable kind; here, though, it offers an opportunity for Vassiliou to depict his love of his land and everyday life in it. The banality of the object is turned into a symbol of warmth, well-being, comfort, through the rhythmic repetition of pattern and the alternation of form, cast against the backdrop of a bright Mediterranean sandscape. An impressive work, drenched in bright Greek light with intensive impact and brightness.
