‘The cell of the Great Virgin Mary’ (Mt Athos) 1924

Signed oil on card 23×28 cm

€ 3.500 – 5.000

With a warm, gentle light, a catalyst in his colors and a clear reference to the spiritualization of matter, Papaloukas captures the cell of Megali Panagia (Great Virgin Mary), one of the most historic of Mount Athos, which was once destroyed by pirates. With a sense of purity in tonal intensities, superb color harmony in the composition and extraordinary forms in the architectural rendering of the cell and its chapel, the artist portrays masterly one of the oldest buildings of Mount Athos whose long history begins in the 10th century. Numerous treasures and relics are still kept there today.
