A painting by one of the greatest Greek painters and art-teachers of the 19th century. Lytras is one of the most important representatives of the Munich School, in addition to being a pioneer who shaped the teaching of Fine Arts in Greece. The revolutionaries in the painting are rendered with unprecedented softness clarity and tenderness, contrasting with the cruelty of their life and struggle. Pure austerity idealizes while also evanescing them. It gives the forms spirit by associating them with values and ideals such as patriotism, bravery, and masculine prowess. The masterful use of color leads to wonderful light variations which in turn cause the work to shine with a peculiar inner light, adding flow to the narrative of the scene as much as to a nation’s adventure.
