This excellent study, a great recent discovery, offers a compelling narrative of the multifaceted and emblematic artist of both German and modern Greek art of the 19th century Nikolaos Gyzis. Gyzis was a prominent figure in the Munich School and a regular professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. His surviving studies, originally intended for his paintings and other artistic endeavors, include posters, decorations for magazines and pamphlets as well as diplomas and medals. The female figure is a dominant presence in numerous of his works appearing symbolically as Art, Poetry, Music, Spring, or even Glory. Here, the monumentalization of the female form, obviously as “Painting”, is rendered with particular sweetness and musicality effortlessly revealing his drawing skill and acuity. The figure holds a brush and palette in one hand and an olive branch in the other symbolizing both glory and the art of painting.
