‘A road in Samsun’

Signed oil/tempera on board 59×47 cm

€ 1.700 – 2.500

An excellent painting with an eastern flavor by Symeon Savvidis, one of the most important “orientalist” Greek master-painters of the 19th century and one of the main representatives of the so-called “Munich School”, himself hailing from the Pontus region of Asia Minor. With particular clarity he depicts the neighborhood of Samsun fixated on the harmony of line and color. Because of his origins, nostalgia pervades most of his work, including this one, in which it is evident in the negotiation of the subject matter. Color was one of his strongest points. As a narrative flow, the chromatic adventure emerges effortlessly through episodes of matter and light. Tenderly and comfortably shaped, warm, earthy, sensuous volumes of color lend the peculiar otherworldly magic to this landscape as though out of a tender dream.
