Parthenis Konstantinos (1878 – 1967)

The heroic phase of Greek modernism

  • His being a well-travelled man exposed to a wide range of artistic influences shows in his work. He was especially influenced by Gustav Klimt and the Viennese Sezession, a marriage of Symbolism and Art Nouveau. His later work reveals the influence of post-impressionism and fauvism, no doubt acquired in Paris.
  • He earned a living as an icon painter.
  • Was a founding member of “Team Art” («Ομάδα Τέχνη»), a notable grouping of important artists that aimed to break the yoke of conservative academia over art in Athens.
